Open Models, Licenses, And Strategic Choices

Compare using a hosted model with running a model yourself, including costs and permissions.

About This Course

Introduction

Downloading model weights can offer control, flexibility, and a useful way to learn. Check the license, operating costs, training documentation, privacy arrangements and integration requirements separately. Evaluate each of those questions before choosing an open model for a task.

We will examine open source and open weights, repositories, licenses, release-specific terms, self-hosting, managed services, community contributions, total costs, and competitive choices. Your project compares open-model options for a defined task and deployment. Modules 6, 14, and 16 provide the technical background.

Named examples identify a release and the documents checked for it. Consult current evaluations when comparing available models. A provider can use different licenses across releases, and derivatives may inherit obligations. When making a real decision, check the exact files and current terms again.

Planned Lessons

  1. Openness Has Several DimensionsSeparate access to a model’s code, learned numbers, training examples and permitted uses.
  2. Open Source And Open WeightsUnderstand the difference between being able to download a model and having open-source permissions.
  3. What A License DoesRead what a model’s licence allows and the conditions attached to using it.
  4. A Release-Specific ComparisonCompare specific model releases using their actual capabilities and terms.
  5. Repositories, Model Cards, And Version IdentitiesIdentify the exact model version behind a download or performance claim.
  6. Self-Hosting: Control And ResponsibilityFind out what a team must manage when it runs a model on its own computers.
  7. Hosted APIs And Managed Open-Model ServicesCompare services that run downloadable models on a customer’s behalf.
  8. Total Cost And The Volume CrossoverEstimate how the number of requests changes the cost of hosting a model yourself.
  9. Performance Is A Configuration ClaimRead performance claims alongside the hardware and settings used to produce them.
  10. Adaptation And Derivative ArtifactsTrack what changes when a model is adapted and which conditions still apply.
  11. Community Contributions And Ecosystem DependenciesIdentify the outside projects and contributors an AI system depends on.
  12. Safety, Security, And Release ChoicesConsider the risks and controls involved in giving people access to a model.
  13. Reproducibility And Scientific AccessUnderstand what researchers need to check a result or repeat an experiment.
  14. Why Organizations Release ModelsExplore why a company or research group may choose to share a model.
  15. If Model Capability Becomes Cheaper, Where Does Value Move?Consider where businesses can earn money as capable AI models become less expensive.
  16. Choosing A Model Strategy For The TaskChoose how to access and run a model based on the task it needs to perform.
