Main Point
Explain a connected model/application system, reproduce its key quantities, and design a controlled 10-case comparison. Report expected behavior separately from any actual observations and limit conclusions to the evidence.
Key Points
- Explain connections, not only component names.
- Label quantities, units, precision and excluded state.
- Define 10 cases and expected behavior before collecting outputs.
- Isolate a factor or name the comparison as a system comparison.
- Keep output correctness, source support, format, runtime and action behavior separate.
- A complete paper-based plan is valid without buying or running a service.
1. Milestone M01 — Draw and explain the system
Draw input → tokenization → embeddings/position → transformer blocks → vocabulary scores → decoding → output → validation. Add retrieval, application memory and tools at the application layer. Explain each connection in 1–2 sentences, including what enters, what changes and what leaves. Identify the application’s action-permission boundary.
For a chosen architecture, preserve its actual block order. If you use the original post-normalized encoder example, show attention plus its own input and normalization, then feedforward plus its own input and normalization. An optional local implementation needs its own exact configuration; this project does not require one.
2. Milestone M02 — Calculate and interpret
Complete the worksheet’s attention, weight-storage, context and training-work calculations. State rounding order, decimal versus binary units, accounting convention and exclusions. Explain why raw weights are not whole runtime memory and an estimated training time is not a project quote.
The optional architecture-specific KV exercise provides a further check; it does not replace the core calculations. Keep these classroom numerical constructions separate from any real internal representation of a policy answer.
3. Milestone M03 — Prepare 10 cases
Use case_packet.md and its complete long-context variants, or version equivalent harmless cases for your actual task. Preserve coverage of extraction, missing evidence, conflict, an exception, calculation, evidence position, strict format, ambiguity, relevant language and a harmless embedded source instruction.
Write expected behavior and a scoring rule before testing. Keep this learner packet separate from model_case_packet.md, which explains possible answers. For the language case, document any relevance-based adaptation and validate the expected meaning before interpreting language capability.
4. Milestone M04 — Design a controlled comparison
Choose a paper plan, an existing harmless manual interface, or an optional implementation with an explicit approved budget. No purchase, installation or production API experiment is required. A real implementation uses current official documentation and approved secret handling; never place actual credentials in these artifacts.
Record 2 exact model versions or access configurations and the factor under test. Hold relevant input/evidence and scoring constant for a model comparison. If retrieval, examples or product controls differ, describe the system factor instead. Document required templates, generation limits/settings, hardware/runtime/precision for local use, and any unavailable backend identity.
Use comparison_record.md. Define repetitions where supported and record date, full input/context, output, usage, latency, errors and scores. Leave actual observations blank until a test runs. An interface response establishes connectivity; it does not establish task quality by itself.
5. Milestone M05 — Write a 2-page interpretation
Use interpretation_template.md to separate model capability, input quality, retrieval, format, runtime and product/action behavior. Give a bounded claim tied to cases, versions, settings and scoring.
Discuss a case where applicable additional context could support a better answer and a case where it would not resolve the failure by itself, such as contradictory authority or an action-permission gap. If you have run a test, use its actual observations. Otherwise identify these as expected mechanisms and leave measured results unknown. Never turn the provided model key into a fabricated experiment.
6. Closing
Submit the explained diagram, calculation sheet, 10-case packet, controlled comparison record and 2-page interpretation. The separate key and rubric show what a well-supported plan contains. A strong result is a traceable explanation and a defensible claim, not an impressive answer from 1 prompt.
7. Learning Checks
Attempt the checks before opening the explanations. They are formative and separate from the 25-point milestone rubric.
M14-PROJECT-Q01
Version X receives retrieval material while Y receives none. Their answers differ. What comparison factor is confounded, and how would you isolate the exact model version?
Your response: ____________________
Show explanation after your attempt
Input/evidence differs, so model identity and retrieval are confounded. Give both exact versions the same relevant packet and scoring rule, documenting required templates and settings. Alternatively test retrieval as the factor and call it a system-input comparison. Different outputs alone establish neither which factor caused the difference nor a general model winner.
M14-PROJECT-P01
No model has been run, but the expected key shows that complete context permits the policy exception to be applied. Can the report say “B improved measured accuracy”? State the truthful report boundary.
Your response: ____________________
Show explanation after your attempt
The plan specifies expected behavior, not measured improvement. State that complete context supplies the facts needed to apply the exception, while actual outputs, accuracy and change remain unknown. If a later authorized test runs, bind the recorded cases, conditions and measurements before reporting an observed improvement.

A. Attention
All 3 positions are allowed. Already-scaled scores are (2,1,0); values are (2,0),(0,2),(1,1). Compute exponentials, normalized shares and coordinates. For classroom working, round shares to 3 decimal places before multiplication. Then mask position C and renormalize. Label any higher-precision alternative separately.
Working and precision rule: ____________________
B. Weight storage
Use 10 billion parameters at 2 bytes each. Give raw bytes, decimal GB and approximate binary GiB. State runtime exclusions.
Working and exclusions: ____________________
C. Context
A hypothetical combined 16,000-token budget reserves 1,000 for instructions, 1,000 for tool definitions, 500 for the current question and 2,000 for output. Calculate documents/history before additional formatting or margin. Label the 500 correctly.
Working and convention: ____________________
D. Training work
Use work≈6ND for N=7×10^9 parameters and D=10^12 processed tokens. Assume 10^17 useful FLOPs/second. Calculate work, seconds and days, then explain why the result is not a complete training schedule/budget.
Working, rate assumption and excluded work: ____________________
Optional E. KV architecture
Under the supplied uncompressed KV formula 2×L×S×B×Hkv×Dh×b, use L=32,S=8192,B=1,Hkv=8,Dh=128,b=2 bytes. Calculate bytes/GiB and compare Hkv=32. This is cache only, not checkpoint storage.
